Snow Diving

Perhaps because they are hunted by so many other species, ptarmigans are remarkably well adapted to hiding and escaping predators. In the winter, a ptarmigan will dive from the air into a snowbank so it can avoid leaving tracks that would give away its location. It can then rest for hours or days in a small air pocket in the snowbank, insulated from cold winds and hidden from predators, until it resurfaces to search for food.
