When they get cold, birds often react in the same way as humans – they shiver! Shivering produces heat through involuntary muscle movements. It uses a lot of energy though, so it only works if the bird has access to plenty of food. Birds can also produce some heat without shivering. Unlike mammals, however, they do not have brown fat, which is a special type of fat whose only function is generating heat.
