PisuktiitThe Walkers

The pisuktiit, "the walkers", include all the large land mammals. These are distinguished by several important characteristics: they walk on land, go wherever they want, and have distant destinations; it is implied that they can move long distances – and, in fact, they often do since many of these animals are migratory – or at least range over large territories; and they are capable of going in the water, to cross lakes or rivers.

These characteristics serve to distinguish the pisuktiit, which are also known as nirjutiviit nunamiutait – terrestrial prey "par excellence" – from the smaller land mammals, the nirjutiarsiit nunamiutait, or secondary, subordinate land prey.
